Toys for newborns
Newborn babies have limited physical and sensory development, so selecting the right toys can be challenging. Sharp contrasts and black and white patterns are easiest for a newborn's eyes to focus on, so pick books, mobiles, and other visually engaging toys should have at least some high contrast areas. Newborns also love looking at faces. Rattles are a perennial favorite with good reason, as babies enjoy noises they can control almost as soon as they are born. Traditional rattles can be hard for a newborn to hang on to, though, which is why wrist and ankle rattles are gaining in popularity. These soft rattles are attached to comfortable velcro bands and can be worn anywhere.
Newborns cannot sit unassisted, so toys that require a sitting position (like swings and jumpers) are not appropriate. Instead, consider special activity mats to encourage muscle strengthening tummy-time activities.
Toys for babies
Babies 6 to 12 months are more active than their younger counterparts, and are ready for a whole range of new toys. With fully-developed vision, rapidly improving hand-eye coordination, and the ability to sit unassisted (and soon crawl!), there's nothing babies won't play with. Babies love bright colors, interesting characters, and anything that helps them move.
Babies at this age will put anything in their mouths, and are stronger than you might think. Follow all safety recommendations when looking for toys, and avoid anything with small pieces that can become detached and present a choking hazard.
Toys for toddlers
Toddlers are ready to run, jump, dance, climb, pretend, and some are even ready to begin reading. Toddlers are ready to start imagining their futures, so now is an excellent time to start investing in dress-up and other pretend-play toys. Your toddler might not be ready to play soccer yet, but balls for kicking and throwing can help develop gross motor skills (and be entertaining for moms and dads, too!). This is also a key time for developing language skills, so don't leave out the board books from your shopping list. Early readers may be able to independently read simple sentences at three years old, or sooner!
In addition to keeping your eye on choking hazards, it's important to remember that toddlers are budding individuals. Try to pick toys that are related to their interests, and check ahead if the toddler you're shopping for has any fears, such as vacuums or clowns. Most importantly, don't worry if the box gets played with more than the toy it contained.
